First printing (trade issue). Inscribed on the title page: "For Sol [Libsohn]," signed, dated February 1964. Oblong quarto (26cm x 35cm); decorative cloth hardcover in publisher's slipcase; the book is bright and Fine, the slipcase slightly rubbed and worn, Very Good. A lovely copy and a great association: Libsohn (1914-2001), the noted documentary photographer and co-founder of the Photo League, was Shahn's neighbor and close friend in the planned Great Depression community of Roosevelt, New Jersey. Shahn was among the community's original residents; Libsohn, in an interview a year before his death in 2001, credited Shahn with bringing him to Roosevelt from Brooklyn in 1947: ".I really wanted to come out here to talk to Ben Shahn, who was one of my hero photographers [though best remembered as a painter, Shahn had been among the core group of FSA photographers during the Depression, traveling throughout the South with Ed Rosskam and Walker Evans].I thought [Shahn] was pretty damn wonderful.we had exhibited some of his work in the Photo League.when I came out here, I thought, wow, it's not too far from New York. I have two kids; they need to go to school and here we live in a fifth floor walk up in New York. This place has fresh air and a school right in the middle of town. And this guy said, 'They're selling these houses for $6,500.' So I said, 'Gee, that sounds reasonable.'" (interview with Gary Saretzky, under the auspices of the Monmouth County Library, January 28, 2000, published on the library's website).
