514+(1) pages. Original black blind-stamped cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED "ELIJAH CURTIS ESQ.--WITH THE AFFECT REGARDS, M. HOPKINS." Beneath this ink inscription is written in pencil "1849 N.Y." (possibly by Curtis?). Mark Hopkins was the President of Williams College for many years, of whom it was famously said that the ideal education was "a student on one end of the log and Mark Hopkins on the other." Elijah P. Curtis organized the first volunteer Union regiment in Massac County, Illinois; his home in Metropolis Illinois is on the National Register of Historic Places. Good condition with occasional wear to the extremitites and minor chipping to head and heel of spine. Seller Inventory # 013198
