Inscribed first edition of these collected essays on "rational human behavior" by a pioneer in artificial intelligence research and the future winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics (1978). Simon's second book, MODELS OF MAN attempts to offer mathematical representations of human behavior, concepts that would increasingly become important in economic forecasting and ultimately artificial intelligence. Indeed, according to Google Scholar, Simon is the most cited figure in research on AI. Further, when Simon won the 1975 Turing Award, the committee specifically praised Simon's "contributions to artificial intelligence." A genuinely uncommon book, it is scarce in jacket, and rare signed. This copy is inscribed to his colleague Richard D. Edwards (1919-2006), professor of mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh (Simon was longtime faculty at nearby Carnegie-Mellon), a nice association of an influential work. 9'' x 6''. Original green boards. In original unclipped (no price, as issued) cream dust jacket. 287, [1] pages. Inscribed by Simon on front free endpaper to Richard D. Edwards, with Edwards's ownership signature on front paste-down. Jacket spine somewhat toned. A bit of soil to front panel. Minor edgewear with two small splits at folds. Very good plus in very good minus jacket. Seller Inventory # 54414

Hardcover. Condition: Fine for Age. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Black cloth with white lettering and line design to front and sp., virtually pristine. xiv +(2 blank) + 287 small text figs numbered by chapter; no obvious internal faults, a tiny blue ink-spot to top edge near spine is only thing I can see, otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. A landmark work 1st published in 1957, both this and 1961 reprint apparently rare in hardback, indeed no web-matches for this one at time of listing.
