Madge Tennent (1879-1972) is acclaimed as "among the most accomplished and globally renowned artists ever to have lived and worked in Hawaii'' (Wiki), her adopted land, which inspired the paintings in this comprehensive collection of her work. A Limited Edition (No. 830), designed, printed, & bound for the author under the supervision of Columbia University Press in New York in Oct. 1949, this copy was SIGNED by the ARTIST/AUTHOR with a personalized inscription at the Tennent Art Foundation in Honolulu. An undated 4-page brochure from an exhibition of Tennent's work at that museum is laid in, along with 7 unfinished sketches on 8.5" x 11" onion-skin-like paper tucked in rear. The book has 180 pages + 22 unnumbered pages of black-and-white Family Photographs + 18 unnumbered plates demonstrating "Story of My Painting,'' + 24 unnumbered plates entitled "Story of My Drawing." Three pages (6 plates) have slight insect damage to fore edge side. A couple in this last section have . The Foreword by Ernest Field traces Tennent's growth as an artist since her student days in Paris & commends her Hawaiian paintings for both their" aesthetics & humanitarianism that portrays the Hawaiian race so poignantly" (her work was done when HI was not yet a state, but an exotic locale). Condition is VG: completely clean, but heavily tanned to exterior & around all edges of interior pages. Slight tearing at head of spine-front board interface, with evidence of regluing.
