About bthe author. Emeritus Professor John Pate considers himself a somewhat ill-disciplined, curiosity-driven biologist with a life long desire to describe and interpret the behaviour patterns and mode if functioning if ant plant or animal which happens vto catch his imagination. During his boyhood, first in England and then in Northern Ireland in the 1930's and 1940's,vouchers pursuits ran free rein, enabling him to hone skills in observing Naturw, with local birds, plants, spiders and insects as major subjects of study. At the same time, vegetable gardening with his father in the war years and a succession of working holidays on farms introduced John to the application if practical skills in raising and caring for crop and animals. This tge led on somewhat serendipitously to an academic career centred on teaching and research in Botany, firstly at Queens University Belfast and then at the University of Western Australia. The topics pursued and the outcomes of his research during this working period led to publication od a number of books and several hundred research articles and recognition in the form of Ledals, can Honorary Degree and Fellowships of various leaned societies. Following his retirement to a magnificent 160 acre forested property in Denmark. Western Australia in 1999, John has been able to reignite his general interests in Natural History and it is the fruits of these and his earlier youth time experiences which constitute the subject matter of the book.
