This book gives brief, yet concise facts about the most important events and people that shaped this state. Not only does it give a daily look at Delaware's history for each day of the year, but also it gives a time- line look at the history as it unfolds from year to year, starting in 1608.This is an effort to make students, life-long residents, new residents, as well as visitors more aware of Delaware's glorious history that has earned it such notable nick-names as 'The Diamond State', 'Small Wonder', 'Corporate Capital', 'Uncle Sam's Pocket Handkerchief', 'The Peach State', 'The Chemical Capital', and 'The First State' just to name a few.This history is written in the narrative form of a diary to engage the reader's interest. The goal is to relate the history in a way that would be easy for the most novice of readers and, at the same time, engaging and challenging for more advanced readers and researchers. About the Author
Abdullah Rashid Muhammad, who was born in Georgetown, South Carolina, spent his formative years in Baltimore, Maryland, where he lived for 38 years. From childhood, he had an inquisitive mind and a determination to find out how different things originated and worked. One may say that he was a born researcher. With this seemingly innate ability, Mr. Muhammad was immediately attracted to history and science. Two of his early passions in life were historical events and politics, both of which continue to be central in his life. In June 1969, he graduated from Baltimore City College High School, as a merit scholar, and then, completing credits early, graduated cum laude from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he majored in Government and English. At Bowdoin, Mr. Muhammad became the curator for the college s first Black history library, as well as an outstanding athlete and college leader. Over the years, Mr. Muhammad continued his education, adding professional development and other credits before receiving in 1996 a M. A. degree, with a concentration in teaching the deaf, from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, New York. Then, in 2001, he obtained a M. Ed. degree in Supervision and Administration from Bank Street College of Education, New York, New York. Mr. Muhammad began his teaching career in January, 1973 at his high school alma mater, and continued that career into three different states Maryland, New York and Delaware with concentration in Social Studies. As the owner of his own company, Cards By Abdullah, he continues to teach Social Studies, lecture on several historical topics, and live history as a re-enactor to many groups throughout the state of Delaware. Abdullah portrays the role of the first African to live in the Delaware Colony of New Sweden, during the 17th century. He has self-published, thus far, two unique references on history for the state of Delaware Delaware History Calendar 2007-2012 and The Making of Delaware One Day at a Time, both of which became top sellers in the state. Currently, he is working on a new book of a very over-looked topic in American colonial history dealing with free Africans in the 17th century.
