First edition of the pictorial history of the American space program, from the establishment of NASA to the Apollo XI mission. Oblong octavo, original boards, profusely illustrated with black and white and full color photographs. Presentation copy, inscribed by Neil Armstrong on the front free endpaper, "To Kevin Stern- With The Best Wishes Of A Fellow Space Enthusiast Neil Armstrong." In fine condition. On July 20th 1969, American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on the lunar surface. Six hours after landing, Neil Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface; Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later and the two spent over two hours collecting lunar materials. Armstrong's first step onto the lunar surface was broadcast on live TV to a worldwide audience, during which he uttered the historic phrase, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Apollo 11 effectively ended the Space Race and fulfilled a national goal proposed in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy: "before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.". Seller Inventory # 144136
