Add to basket8vo. Quarter black cloth with gilt spine lettering and green paper over boards, dust jacket. xxv, 163pp. Frontispiece, 2 illustrations. Near fine/very good. Jacket a bit age toned. Handsome first U.S. edition of the historical drama about Sir Thomas More and Henry VIII, whose 1966 film version earned British playwright Bolt (1924-95) an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. This sharp copy boasts two choice autograph additions: Tipped to the front flyleaf are two fine, matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards, the upper of which is boldly signed by Bolt in blue fineline (he dates it 11 September 1971 at upper right) and the lower of which is signed hugely by George Rose (1920-88; portrayed The Common Man in the Broadway debut in 1961) in black fineline (he dates it 5 January 1970 at upper right). Rose appears in the original New York cast member list in this edition (first, as they're given in order of appearance). Laid in are the ideal bookmarks: Bolt and Rose's original transmittal envelopes. Also laid in is a 6" X 9" stage program for a 1965 Loras College (Dubuque, Iowa) production of this play, listing Father Karl G. Schroeder as director -- and from whose collection this copy hails. (Schroeder, 1910-99, was from 1938 to 1994 an English professor at Loras College.).
