About this Item
This is the very first edition, published in India in 1944, two years before it was published in the US,UK and Canada. Comparing to the 1946 edition with hundreds of thousands of copies, the India edition had a very small print run, perhaps 1200-1500 copies due to the short supply of printing paper in India due to the Second World War, and the then nearly 70 year old author was virtually unknown. The India edition has an additional chapter Just Tigers featuring Corbett s long experience in the jungles to photograph wild tigers with a cine camera, and samples in 4 extra photos added to it. A typo is hand corrected by Corbett on page 38, printed ,tiger, corrected to leopard. This was fixed in all further editions. Corbett presented this copy to the famous author, plant collector and explorer F. Kingdon Ward when he visited Corbett in Nyeri, Kenya in 1952, inscribed , dated and signed. (See images) The book comes from a collection owned by Wilson Lundy (UK) who collected signed Corbett books and ephemera for the best part of his life. After his death in 2017, his massive collection of books, including 36 signed books were auctioned off in England. He got all the signed copies rebound in half or full morocco leather. This copy is half morocco as well as the book corners laid over matching cloth. A beautiful tight copy, doesn t appeared read after the rebinding. A very good association copy presented by Corbett to F.Kingdon Ward (1885-1958) whose bold stamp is seen above Corbett s inscription and Signature. Seller Inventory # 31122023-2
