Originally published in book form in India in 1948 ( not 47 as mistakenly claimed) with a few photograph, this 1954 Illustrated edition is the first such edition as stated on the copyright page. All images including the color painting that features the cover were done by the famed British artist Raymond Sheppard (1913-1958). His skillful drawings and sketches are seen throughout this book including one of Jim Corbett himself along with Ibbotson entering a hostile native home one night after being followed by the leopard (see images). The book is inscribed and signed during the 1954 Christmas Season by Corbett - that was his last Christmas, as he died in April 1955. The inscription reads: We join in wishing you a very Happy Christmas - Signed Jim Corbett. He was living with his sister Maggie at the Baden Powell Cottage in Nyeri at the time, and was nearing 80. The recipient must have known Maggie and Jim Corbett. This first illustrated volume comes with the rare pictorial dust jacket by Raymond Sheppard with edges and spine ends worn due to its 70 years of shelf life and handling with small pieces missing, now protected in mylar. Rare First illustrated edition, inscribed and signed by the author on his last Christmas. Seller Inventory # 26122023-2
