Spine slightly darkened, front free endpaper mildly spotted. Inscribed by the author to Lord and Lady David Cecil, "For Rachel & David, with love from Ralph", and with the 1986 (Humphrey Stone) Red Lion House book-label. Ralph Ricketts (1902-1998) was David Cecil's Oxford contemporary, and, like Cecil, a friend of L.P. Hartley; he and Cecil were either side of Hartley's bed when he died.
