About this Item
First printing. 8vo. xiii, 200 pp. Illustrated with two B & W plates with tissue guards. Original burgundy-colored cloth binding. This book was presented and inscribed on the title page by Richard Bucke's brother Dr. E. P. Bucke (who was also a Canadian physician who studied, as did Richard, at McGill University), to one Bertha Johnston. In addition Johnston has affixed the original stamped brown paper mailing wrapper from the book (with the Bucke's hand-written address and his return address) to the front pastedown. Richard Bucke was a prominent Canadian psychiatrist who was influenced by French philosopher's Auguste Comte's thought, as well as by Walt Whitman with whom he became close friends (the book is dedicated to Whitman). Approx. 1/8" pieces worn away from spinal extremities, some wear at the tips, a tiny chip fore edge of the front free endpaper, else tight, very good; contents and illustrations bright. An uncommon book, especially so with his brother's association. Seller Inventory # 20661
