Add to basket4to (150 x 222 mm). (14), 242 pp. With numerous photographic illustrations and three maps. Full cloth with giltstamped spine-title. In the original illustrated publisher's dust jacket. Signed copy. First edition, first impression. A classic discussing life among the Marsh Arabs of Southern Iraq. The fruit of seven years' research, Thesiger s description of a unique culture and landscape is one of remarkable depth, and has only grown in significance with the dramatic reduction of the marshlands by draining in the late 1980s and 1990s. As are all of Thesiger s books, it is beautifully illustrated with his photographs of the local population, villages and interiors, fishermen, shepherds, hunters, festivities, and other aspects of nomad life, including dismantling a house to go harvesting and travelling the marshes aboard rafts and boats. - Slight lean to text-block, otherwise very good. A little wear to head and foot of dust jacket, else fine. - From the library of Sir Terence Clark, with a loosely inserted photograph showing Thesiger signing his copy of "Arabian Sands". Sir Terence Clark (b. 1934) had a long and distinguished career in the diplomatic service, much of which was spent in the Middle East. In addition to service in Bahrain, Jordan, Syria, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, he was British Ambassador to Iraq (1985-89) and Oman (1990-94).
