New York: Crown Publishers, 1942.
First edition, first printing.
Signed and inscribed by Ernest Hemingway in Spanish ?buen amigo, amigo camarada, Ernesto Hemingway.?
Thick octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original dust jacket. Very good book in a very good dust jacket. Spotting to the text block, with light general toning; the binding remains firm and the text is clean. The dust jacket shows rubbing and light edge wear; not price-clipped. Now housed in new archival mylar.
A major wartime anthology assembled at the height of World War II, Men at War reflects Hemingway?s long preoccupation with combat, courage, fear, and endurance, and includes a substantial introduction plus selections by Hemingway alongside a wide range of historical and literary voices.
Signed copies of this hefty editorial project are far less frequently encountered than signed novels, making any example with a clear Hemingway inscription desirable. The Spanish wording adds an uncommon and fitting layer of association: Hemingway?s deep ties to Spain?both cultural and through his experience reporting on the Spanish Civil War?make a Spanish inscription feel especially personal and contextually apt, and it is decidedly rarer to encounter him inscribing a book in Spanish than in English. Bonus points for anyone who can identify the ?Jose Luis? this is inscribed to!!
