SIGNED BY HARVEY CUSHING: "Dr. Martin Gumpert/ with the compliments of/ Harvey Cushing" (see photo). Martin Gumpert devoted a chapter to Harvey Cushing in his book "Das Leben für die Idee. Neun Forscherschicksale" (1935), which was translated into English as "Trail-Blazers of Science. Life Stories of Some Half Forgotten Pioneers of Modern Research" (1936). The chapter on Harvey Cushing is entitled, in the English translation, "The Outlook. Harvey Cushing, the Brain Surgeon, a Type of the Future Scientist." Gumpert sent a copy of the original German edition to Harvey Cushing, who had not known about Gumpert's work until the book had been published. After reading the German edition, Cushing wrote a long letter to Gumpert (November 19, 1935), which Gumpert included--with the title "When Pavlov Visited America"--in the English translation.
