Signed and inscribed by Van Vechten in black fountain pen ink on the front free endpaper: "Dear Mary, This is a first edition and rather rare one. I am passing it on to you at very meagre part payment for your interest and devotion to my photographic show* which owes so much to your arrangement, selections & suggestions. So, A Merry Christmas! & my lowest bow! Carl Van Vechten, December 1942, New York." *The exhibition "The Theatre Through The Camera of Carl Van Vechten" was held from 18 November to 11 January, 1943 at Museum of the City of New York.
