First English edition translated by Wynne Edwin Baxter (1844-1920), augmented, from the fourth edition. The book was originally issued in French in 1869. / Henri Ferdinand van Heurck was a Belgian diatom specialist and microscopist. Born in an industrialist family, he taught himself microscopy and botany and wrote several pioneering works on diatoms, their study under the microscope and their preservation.
