Some marking to boards and wear to spine mostly at head and foot. Previous bookseller's catalogue description tipped in front endpaper. Very good condition. In custom-made black drop-over box, leather gilt spine label. Details reports from Parliament in April 1657 (during the Protectorate), debating whether the Lord Protector (Cromwell) was to take the title of King. The book records the speeches arguing that he should take the crown (as part of a revised constitution). It includes speeches from Cromwell. His final speech ends: "That I cannot undertake this Goverment with the Title of a King, and that is mine answer to this great and weighty business." "Monarchy Asserted" was edited by Nathaniel Fiennes or by Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke, both supporters of Oliver Cromwell. The names of the members of the Committee are enclosed in brackets on the title page. The preface "To the reader" is signed: By a lover of his King and Countrey.
