Inscribed in the year before publication to noted English poet Geoffrey Hill: "Geoffrey Hill with love. David W. 57." Wright lost his hearing at age 7 after contracting scarlet fever; his 1969 autobiography was titled *Deafness: A Personal Account*. *The Daily Telegraph* called him "the foremost South African poet of his generation," and in 1980 the recipient of this book, Geoffrey Hill wrote: "It is a creative paradox that we owe to a deaf man some of the most striking images of sound in contemporary English poetry."
