Add to basket(JACKSON, ANDREW). [BINNS, John]. Monumental Inscriptions. [N.P.: n.p., 1828]. 1st ed. [8]pp. Orig. printed wrappers. Removed, light scattered foxing, else very good. Rare, Worldcat locates seven copies. Known as "coffin handbills," this pamphlet published imagined headstone inscriptions of men ordered shot by Jackson after the Battle of New Orleans for having deserted the army after the Battle of Mobile the previous year. The pamphlet was used as anti-Jackson propaganda in the 1828 presidential election, a race full of personal attacks and slanders on both candidates, and copies were distributed by pro-Adams congressmen, using their free franks. Jackson had not actually ordered the men to be shot, but had signed off on the military court's verdicts. The authorship of a like-named piece bearing the same text at the American Antiquarian Society (Shoemaker 32382), which was printed in Baltimore in 1828, is attributed to John Binns. Binns (1772-1860) was an Irish-American journalist based in Philadelphia. This copy has a contemporary inscription on the front wrapper about the contents, and a contemporary ownership inscription on the verso of p. 1: "Misstress Jane Ann /Watkins here book /presented by here father." We have been unable to trace her.
