1951 FIRST EDITION. SIGNED by Bradford Washburn on the title page with a significant Mt McKinley association: "Many thanks for your help. Bradford Washburn." Obviously inscribed to Bill Hackett (though not named in the inscription), an old climbing partner and friend of Washburn. Hackett made the first ascent of Denali's West Buttress route with Washburn. This book is from the collection of William Hackett with his bookplate on the inside of the front cover. Hackett, a WWII combat veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, was the first person to climb 5 of the Seven Summits, the first to climb both Denali and Logan, the first to climb the N Peak of Logan, a summiting member of Bradford Washburn's expedition that made the first ascent of the popular West Buttress route on Denali, leader of the 1960 USA K2 expedition, the first American to climb Aconcagua, and the first American to climb Mt Kenya. The "many thanks" inscription by Washburn is obviously to Hackett. CONDITION: The book has some edge wear to covers but no loss, spine has faded penned title about 50% gone (not original from publisher since this book was issued with blank spine.probably penned by Hackett at one time long ago), no writing or marks on any pages other than Hackett's bookplate and Washburn's inscribed signature, bright pages with no foxing, solid binding. The book measures 229mm tall x 178mm, and has 88 pages. Lists 264 items giving detailed descriptions of their content. Includes 8 full pages of text from an article by W.A. Dickey in an 1897 edition of The Sun, a New York newspaper, that describes sighting Denali for the first time & naming it Mt McKinley. One of the least common books by Bradford Washburn.
