About this Item
[LGBTQ] Sarton, May. Mrs. Stevens Hears the Mermaids Singing. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1965. Stated first edition, first printing, 1965. SIGNED and inscribed by the Author. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.Black hardcover with tan cloth spine, with dust jacket. Personalized inscription signed by Sarton on the half-title. Sarton first came out as a lesbian in this book and that was a scandal at the time. But now the book is an illustration of lesbian and female empowerment. The book has edgewear, good hinges, sound text block, some foxing to outer edges of text block, clean pages. The mylar protected dust jacket is not price clipped, but with rubbing, multiple old price stickers, foxing and wear, still very little paper loss. From the collection of a History professor who became friends with Sarton when they first met at Depauw University in the mid 1950s. Overall very good condition. Seller Inventory # 19338
