Add to basketA Fine copy, other than lacking, regrettably, the original water color print, which has been cleanly removed. Handsomely bound with marbled paper over boards and a yellow cloth spine. No jacket, as issued. Limited to 1,050 copies: 25 reserved by the author. 50 copies, of which this one was included, were bound with an original water color. Inscribed by the author to previous owners on the title page; also hand numbered (no. 5) and signed to the colophon. First printing. 62 pages. 6.5" x 10". American abstract artist Irene Rice Pereira (1902-1971) was also a prolific writer of essays and poetry, much of which inquired into the metaphysical philosophies of art. The Nature of Space (1956) is one such exploration, considering what "space" means in the physical world but also in the mind. "[I]f space exists in the human mind, it must have the properties necessary for growth and the quality of expansion and contraction. We can say that either man's mind develops, through the process of inquiring, and consciousness expands, or that, when the mind stops developing, it contracts, and at a certain point disintegrates. Therefore, if space has the properties of growth-expands and contracts in the human mind-it must have a center of gravity from which the energy can flow." .
