Description:

All original 67 pages + 7 pp publisher's ads. Bound in pale green decorated card 13 x 18 cms with Mint 30 x 25 cm fold out (six panels) map bound in, opposite the Title Page (see images). There is a small red blemish showing on the top cover. This is a considerable rarity in this condition. Only later editions had ten photographs bound in. Spine showing 1 cm minor loss. With the author's inked inscription "R.Barns Esq. With the author's Comp'ts & Best Wishes". The Preface is signed in Print: "C.J.P.,Southampton June 1875". From later editions we find this is C. J. Phillips. There are some very faint pencil annotations opposite the Author's inscription (see second image). Seller Inventory # 006035

Original Cloth. Condition: Good. (iv); (i)-ii; (7)-106 pages + advert leaf. All edges in gilt. Large folding frontispiece map with a slightly untidy repair, 10 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS mounted. Light foxing (not affecting the photographs) Ownership inscriptions on verso of the front endpaper. Original green highly decorative gilt cloth. The first edition was published one year earlier, it did not have photographic illustrations. Folding map at front and 10 albumen photographs mounted on thin card leaves within black ruled borders; these captioned in very light pencil on the blank margins. 8vo (8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches), 106-pages with 1 leaf of advertisements at end. Original bevelled green cloth attractively blocked in gilt, all edges gilt. Some marking to lower bevelled edge, headbands a trifle bruised. Overall this is a superb copy. Inscribed on verso of front free endpaper "Presented to G. J. Smith, August 29th 1880, by his loving wife Fannie". Seller Inventory # 19518
