First Edition. Original cloth-backed printed boards. Very Good, without dust jacket. Inscribed: 'To Dr. Norman Bridge/in sincere appreciation/of his great gift to science/George E. Hale/April 1922'. Books signed by Hale are rare, and this is a fine association: In a Facebook post, CalTech wrote: 'ICYMI: Caltech's Norman Bridge Laboratory of Physics at completion, circa 1922. Designed by Bertram Goodhue at George Ellery Hale's request, this superb facility was built in part to attract physicist Robert Andrews Millikan to Caltech.' 'Dr. Bridge (1844-1925) was a physician, author, and philanthropist. He was a trustee and generous benefactor of the California Institute of Technology, of the University of Southern California, and an esteemed member of Throop Memorial Universalist Church. The Norman Bridge Laboratory at Caltech bears his name. At the time of its placement in 1923, the Great West window at Throop Memorial Church was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Norman Bridge' (Find A Grave). An April 4, 1922 New York Times article, 'Attacking the Atoms' (p. 16), begins with Hale speaking at the opening of the Bridge Laboratory.…
