First edition, in the original illustrated dust jacket. Publisher's green cloth stamped in blue. Octavo. 315 pages.Presentation copy, to "Noné Holt-Jackson / from Frederick Cowles. / 22nd January 1941." Additionally, it was inscribed by the author in Hindi, with several manuscript poems, including one unpublished original, laid in.This book is inscribed by the author in English and Hindi, and Cowles has included a small assortment of manuscript poems with the book. Throughout his life, Cowles maintained an interest in the lifestyle and mannerisms of Gypsies, publishing numerous poems about the Gypsy way of life in The Library World, such as "Gypsy Blood" and "Gypsy Pilgrimage," and maintaining correspondence with others who shared his interests. Noné Holt-Jackson was likely one of these correspondents. Cowles has written a Romanian poem, "Patréni," or "Travels," on the front flyleaf, just underneath his Hindi inscription.
