The Night Wind Howls by Frederick Cowles (First Edition) Signed moderate edgewear, some rubbing to upper board, head and tail pushed, spine somewhat sunned and dirt-stained. Text block edges with scattered staining, top edge dusted; hinges starting, endpapers offset. Text block variously split, pages toned. Dust jacket unclipped ("7s 6d net"); faded and toned, spine sunned, soiling, and faint staining to rear panel, some chipping along edges with loss to head and tail. First edition, in the original illustrated dust jacket. Publisher's green cloth stamped in blue. Octavo. 315 pages.Presentation copy, to "Noné Holt-Jackson / from Frederick Cowles. / 22nd January 1941." Additionally, it was inscribed by the author in Hindi, with several manuscript poems, including one unpublished original, laid in.This book is inscribed by the author in English and Hindi, and Cowles has included a small assortment of manuscript poems with the book. Throughout his life, Cowles maintained an interest in the lifestyle and mannerisms of Gypsies, publishing numerous poems about the Gypsy way of life in The Library World, such as "Gypsy Blood" and "Gypsy Pilgrimage," and maintaining correspondence with others who shared his interests. Noné Holt-Jackson was likely one of these correspondents. Cowles has written a Romanian poem, "Patréni," or "Travels," on the front flyleaf, just underneath his Hindi inscription. Two English translations of Romanian poems, "Carina" and "Patrin," are also laid in, in addition to an unpublished original poem titled "Light of Love.". Seller Inventory # HCX25308-1
