New York, Toronto: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc., 1940. 12mo, (iv), 8 pp. One copy in original wraps, near fine with a little toning, signed by Benét on the half title. One copy in original boards, boards toned, backstrip worn and dampstained. § Both formats of the first edition of Benét's warning against the perils of fascism, published a year before the United States entered the war. Benét died of a heart attack the year before the war ended. He was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer for Western Star, a poem about the settling of America that was unfinished on his death.
