McLain is the last major league pitcher to win 30 or more games in a season, winning 31 games -- along with the Cy Young and MVP awards -- in 1968. McLain received another Cy Young following the next season -- then his impulsive and libertine lifestyle caught up to him. His final milestone in baseball history would come at the end of the 1970 as the centerpiece of a trade between the Tigers and Washington Senators, in which the Tigers fleeced the soon-to-be defunct Senators in one of the worst trades in baseball history. McLain would be a millstone for the Senators, not only seeing his talents degenerate amid off field activities beginning with gambling and including gluttony, but also by actively undermining his skipper, regal baseball legend Ted Williams.
