Two volumes, folio (Bulletins 1 to 8) and large octavo (Bulletins 9 to 18, being separately paginated extracts from 'The Records of the Australian Museum'), approximately 218 pages and 360 pages respectively, extensively illustrated throughout. Black binder's cloth lettered in gilt on the spines; Bulletin 6 a little creased in the bottom margins; Bulletin 8 folded into quarters horizontally before binding; contents of the first volume show minor signs of use, but overall, in excellent condition; contents of the second volume in fine condition. Bulletin No. 1 is a presentation copy, inscribed at the head of the title page to 'Herr Dr Schoetensack . | with the author's compliments | Walter E. Roth | 10.5.4'. Otto Schoetensack (1850-1912), German industrialist turned anthropologist, achieved fame with his 1908 publication identifying a new species, Homo heidelbergensis. The individual titles in the first volume are 'String, and other Forms of Strand'; 'The Structure of the Koko-Yimidir Language'; 'Food: its Search, Capture, and Preparation'; 'Games, Sports and Amusements'; 'Superstition, Magic, and Medicine'; 'An Elementary Grammar of the Nggerikudi Language' (by the Rev. N. Hey, revised by Roth); 'Domestic Implements, Arts, and Manufactures'; and 'Notes on Government, Morals, and Crime'. The individual titles in the second volume are 'Burial Ceremonies, and Disposal of the Dead'; 'Marriage Ceremonies and Infant Life'; 'Tabu, and other Forms of Restriction'; 'On Certain Initiation Ceremonies'; 'Fighting Weapons'; 'Transport and Trade'; 'Decoration, Deformation and Clothing'; 'Huts and Shelters'; 'Postures and Abnormalities'; and 'Social and Individual Nomenclature'. Provenance: Tom Austen Brown (1925-2009), solicitor, collector and philanthropist, with his pencilled ownership initials in both volumes.
