BUTLER, C.M. OLD TRUTHS AND NEW ERRORS. NY: Stanford And Swords, 1850. 12mo., embossed black cloth with publisher's imprint, gilt lettering on spine; 171 pages. First Edition. C[lement] M[oore] Butler was an influential pastor at various churches in major urban areas around the country and was Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1849 to 1853. This book deals with four Discourses he gave as Rector of Trinity Church in Washington, DC. Signed presentation from Butler to Robert Charles Winthrop, one-time Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives: "Hon. Robt. C. Winthrop with the respects of his friend & [Pal?], The Author. Washington, DC, July, 1850." Winthrop, who studied law with Daniel Webster, was an American lawyer and philanthropist. He was also Speaker of the House and I believe he stepped down from that post the month this inscription was penned. Butler was also then the U.S. Senate Chaplain. This book has been withdrawn from the distinguished Bowdoin College Library and has a label on the front pastedown to that affect. The book also has a small call-number label on the spine (which we could remove but chose not to) and Bowdoin blindstamps on a few pages. The covers remain quite clean & bright (text clean & tight but for a minor bit of foxing). An interesting association copy betwen two important Washingtonians in 1850. $275.00.
