Signed by Fuller on the front free endpaper below a tipped-in printed slip that reads: "To a friend, from her grandfather, on the occasion of Alexandra Snyder's sixteenth birthday, November 1, 1969." Uncommon signed. It would seem that Fuller himself pasted in this printed inscription ("to a friend") but we are not sure. The date of the printed inscription suggests that the book was signed in the year of publication. He coined "Spaceship Earth" in this book, which uses the metaphor to look at humanity's past and present, the tension between technological advancement and consumption in the balance of sustainability, on "this superbly designed sphere of almost negligible dimension in the great vastness of space." Fuller was an extremely decorated, polymathic, and popular architect (who popularized the geodesic dome), systems theorist, inventor, futurist, and more, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983, the year he died. Blue boards with a white cloth spine; frontispiece sketch of fuller. Very good or better with trace toning/sunning to top edge and browning from the glue used to tip in the inscription on the half title page, as well as visible through the slip on. Corners sharp and pages clean. In a very good jacket with rubbing and wear to spine ends and corners. More about the book: "R. In this essay on man Mr. Fuller expresses what may well be his penultimate view of the human condition. Here, in a mood at once philosophical and involved, Mr. Fuller traces manâ s intellectual evolution and weighs his capability for survival on this magnificent craft, this Spaceship Earth, this superbly designed sphere of almost negligible dimension in the great vastness of space.

Mr. Fuller is optimistic that man will survive and, through research and development and increased industrialization, generate wealth so rapidly that he can do very great things. But, he notes, there must be an enormous educational task successfully accomplished right now to convert manâ s tenÂdency toward oblivion into a realization of his potential, to a universe-exploring advantage from this Spaceship Earth.

It has been noted that Mr. Fuller spins ideas in clusters, and clusters of his ideas generate still other clusters. The concept “spaceship earthâ is Mr. Fullerâ s, and though used by Barbara Ward as the title of a work of her own the idea was acknowledged by her there as deriving from Mr. Fuller. The brilliant syntheses of some fundamental Fuller principles given here makes of this book a microcosm of the Fuller system.

About the Author
R. Buckminster Fuller has been a Research Professor at Southern Illinois University since 1959. In 1968 the Board of Trustees appointed him University Professor, the second faculty member so honored in the University’s history.

Our name is an homage to Susan Fenimore Cooper's book Rural Hours (1850), considered the first work of environmental nonfiction by an American woman. The daughter of James Fenimore Cooper, Susan Cooper was also an accomplished watercolorist, and her birds from Rural Hours populate these pages. Her rendering of a "chimney swallow" (now known as a swift) serves as our logo and mascot: sleek and elevated, part sky and part city street. Rural Hours is mainly a project of writer and teacher Nick Neely. Along with a pair of MFA degrees in nonfiction and poetry, Nick has a Master's in Literature and Environment from the University of Nevada, Reno. He has much expertise and years of experience in the field of eco-writing. His first book, Coast Range, was a finalist for John Burroughs Medal for nature writing and his second book, Alta California--about a 12-week trek he made along the California coast--was a Los Angeles Times bestseller. Rural Hours is a young venture, but we aspire to be among the leaders in the field of rare and interesting eco-writing. We believe, emphatically, that environmental literature and its preservation is in the service of the preservation of the world. In addition to helping serious collectors and institutions build their libraries and archives, our goal is to curate a substantial "house collection" of environmental writing for public display on this site and beyond, one that shows the evolution of the genre(s). That will be a perennial work in progress. We hope to draw a deep, explorable map of environmental writing that traces the lineage and connections between authors and artists determined to render and protect the earth, locally and globally. At the same time, we would like to challenge the usual contours of the "environmental literature" canon and promote a more diverse and inclusive array of voices; in that way, our longterm goal is to excavate the past and curate toward the future.
