About this Item

This color photograph was taken by White House photographer Bob McNeely in the White House Residence Treaty Room, during a "working breakfast meeting" on the situation in Haiti. Also in attendance at the meeting were President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Vice President Al Gore, Tony Lake and Leon Panetta. This meeting was followed by a press conference the same day. Photograph is signed in the border along the bottom and measures 8" x 10". A fine piece, capturing an important diplomatic victory for the Clinton Administration and former President Jimmy Carter. Operation Uphold Democracy was in response to the 1991 Haitian coup d'�tat, where the democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was deposed by Army General Raoul C�dras. In 1994, a delegation led by former President Jimmy Carter, along with Senator Sam Nunn and General Colin Powell, urged Provisional President �mile Jonassaint and General C�dras to relinquish control or face an invasion by the 82nd Airborne Division. President Aristide returned to power in October 1994, with a UN peacekeeping force remaining in Haiti until 2000. Seller Inventory # 12951
