First 'Everyman's Library' edition. ix, 307pp. Baltasar Gracián (1601-1658) was a Spanish Jesuit priest and Baroque prose writer and philosopher. He is probably best known for his book The Art of Worldly Wisdom, also known as The Oracle, written in 1647. It is a collection of 300 maxims, each with a commentary, on various topics giving advice and guidance on how to live fully, advance socially, and be a better person. The present edition contains the Spanish text and a new English translation, with critical introduction and notes by L.B. Walton. The book is bound in the original lilac cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the bottom of the spine and a gentle crease running down part of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with an inscription on the back of the front free endpaper and a name written on the front of the endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and some creasing along the top rear edge. The spine ends are bumped with a nick of about 1/8" on the top rear spine corner and there is a tear of about 1/4" on the top front edge. A small stain is visible on the reverse of the wrapper around the bottom front spine corner. Seller Inventory # gLitGracian01
