Original cloth binding with title in gilt on spine and front cover, v, 210 pages, colour frontispiece, 79 plates, small piece of spine missing, otherwise very good condition. Early work of the self-taught plant hunter, who had health issues and thus first went to Hawaii and afterwards to Western China - a curious choice for health reasons. Even though Rock apparently deceived about previous academic education, he wrote some fundamental books about the botany of Hawaii and afterwards became a highly succesful plant hunter in Western China and Eastern Tibet. He also became founding father of scientific research about the Na-khi and their language and religion. This book with the ex libris of Dr. A. Boyd Doremus and with handwritten dedication by Rock on the first page: "To Dr. Doremus in sincere appreciation, and with the compliments of Joseph F. Rock" - very rare such.
