1948. First edition. Unpaginated with 12 tipped in colour plates and many other black and white illustrations. Gordon Horner (1915-2006) was an artist who specialized in charcoal portraits. He was War Artist for the Sunday Chronicle and was a principal artist for The Autocar from 1946 to 1980. During the Second World War he fought and was captured in the North African desert and then passed through a succession of prison camps in Italy and Germany before being liberated. He was surprisingly allowed art materials and kept his prison camp art that depicted his wartime experiences and time as a prisoner. After the war he prepared this book using his original artwork, which is accompanied by his own narrative of events and provides an unusual insight into POW life. It contains a signed preface by his fellow P.O.W. and Yorkshire and England cricketer Bill Bowes (William Eric Bowes, 1908-1987). The book is bound in the original light yellow cloth covered boards with a green sciver leather spine with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top corners and a light dent on the top edge of the rear board. The spine ends are lightly bumped with some wear to the leather at the bottom of the spine and a small bit of damage to the leather on the rear board near the spine corner. The contents are tight and very clean with offsetting to the free endpapers. The preface by Bill Bowes has been flatsigned 'Bill Bowes'. The unclipped dustwrapper is also very good with some shelf wear and some light soiling on the back. The corners are lightly bumped and there is slightly heavier bumping to the spine ends. There is an unrepaired tear of about 1/4" on the top rear edge. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover. Seller Inventory # gMilGen22
