French writer Bouzereau is a self-described obsessive about De Palma's films and defends the director against those of his critics who describe him as a Hitchcock imitator and deplore what they consider his excessive violence. Each film and unfilmed script is synopsized and discussed at length, as are De Palma's major themes, among them voyeurism and the duality inherent in people's natures. De Palma is much like Hitchcock in his use of visuals to reveal character, advance the plot, and establish subtext.
