About this Item
501 pp. First edition, first printing; presentation copy from the author to Alfredo de Carvalho. Despite the statement on the title page there is no second volume. 3/4 tan calf; marble boards; black morocco label affixed to spine with gold lettering stamped across; marble endpapers; red and white headbands. Twenty separate studies, each bound in stiff wrappers, comprise this volume. A team of scientists from Stanford Univ. studied the natural history in the Bahia, Pernambuco, and Rio Grande do Norte areas of Brazil. Plans to continue to the mouth of the Amazon and on the the boarder with French Guiana never materialized; a second volume never appeared. The range of subjects include Geology, Ichthyology, Entomology, and Malacology. Writing in the introduction, Branners says: "On landing at Natal we were treated with the greatest courtesy and hospitality by the government, by the state, and by the municipal authorities. A house had been provided for us in the most attractive part of the city, and everything was done to make our stay there useful and agreeable. . . It was my original intention to go to Natal, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and there engage a vessel that would take the expedition along the north coast of Brazil as far as the Brazilian frontier with French Guyana north of the Amazon. Such a trip would have enabled us to study the stone and coral reefs of the northern coast of Brazil but also right across the mouth of the Amazon river. It was hoped that such a study would throw light upon the influence of large streams upon the coastwise migration of shallow-water marine life. . . an unfortunate disturbance in the navy shortly before the expedition reached Brazil. . . every effort to obtain at Natal a boat to convey the expedition along the coast as far as the mouth of the Oyapok, or even to Par? was unsuccessful; and finally it became necessary to abandon altogether the plan of studying the coast and its fauna across the mouth of the Amazon, and to devote our attention to. . . the state of Rio grande do Norte, especially in the vicinity of Natal.
