Octavo, pp. [1-6] [1] 2-322 + 24-page undated publisher's catalogue inserted at rear, original pictorial bevel-edged blue green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel ruled in blind, brown coated endpapers. First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Lindau dated Bombay, August 1885. The major nineteenth-century English-language collection of short fiction by Rudolf Lindau (1829-1910), a German diplomat responsible for commanding the first Swiss delegation to Japan on 28 April 1859, along with Swiss Aimé Humbert-Droz (who was appointed the envoy plenipotentiary for the Swiss federal government). Some of Lindau's fiction portrays the lives of European residents in the Far East. This collection includes the title story ("Das Glückspendel"), "The Seer" ("Der Seher") and three others, one of which is set in Japan. Morgan 5836 (giving contents).
