This touching volume was mostly written during WWII by the black poet from the small black suburb of St. Louis called Meacham Park which became a part of Kirkwood. Not 'great poetry' but his dialect poems are warm and sincere and his religious poems actually quite powerful. The best, is the simple Black and White about being a soldier in a segregated army with Japanese bombs falling on both alike. I was rather shocked, that for all their 'Black Pride' and the honoring of Meacham Park's black neighborhood not only does Kirkwood's library not own a copy of this, they never even heard of it! Book itself is FINE except one ding to cloth edge, inscribed by author. The dust jackest is very good with some scattered small nicks and short tears to edges but quite attractive in its Brodart protector. Flaps are perfect.
