This is a very rare First Printing/First Edition (Rinehart & Company colophon on the copyright page). Beware of sellers who identify later printings as first editions. Moreover, this book is signed and inscribed by the author (see photo). I don't believe there is another signed first printing for sale on the Internet. The inscription reads: 'To a real special friend with so many memories from our trip to the old country (then what appears to be two Swedish words), Thyra, April 24, 1958.' You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are in very good condition. Both the red lettering and the silver design on the spine are nicely bright. The cover edges are in solid shape. There is a tiny dent at the top edge of the rear cover. There's also some superficial, smooth rubbing on the top and bottom cover edges, also at its corners. The page edges look good. The spine has a slight to moderate forward lean. However, the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through the text I haven't see any soiling. There are three tiny spots on the signed page (see photo). Note, however, that all the pages are toned. This is due to the type of paper Rinehart & Company used at the time. The pages, however, are nicely supple. I'm also not finding any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases. I did find one teeny tiny loss at the tip of a top corner, and one teeny tiny loss at the tip of a bottom corner. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And there is no writing other than the author's signed inscription. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've rated it only Fair because of the edge losses, one at the top edge of the front, one at the top edge of the spine, and one off both the top and bottom edges of the rear. There's also a thin tear off the bottom edge of the rear cover, and another off the bottom edge of the rear flap. There is scuffing along each side of the spine and there is some darkening, possibly soiling, at some places on the rear cover. The flaps are in solid shape. A very tiny bit of the loss at the top edge of the front peeks over the top edge of the front flap. There is also a very tiny loss at the tip of the front flap's top corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. From the dust jacket: 'This is a warm, romantic story of a child in Swedish Lapland who had a dream and of a woman in the United States who dared to follow that dream through both joy and a dramatic, guilt-ridden sorrow to its fulfillment.'.
