About this Item
First Edition. Near fine. Very good dj with bumping to top edge. Inscribed by author to his son, David. Signed "Pop"The book covers the El Paso Salt War in 1877, which revolved around ownership and control of immense salt lakes at the base of the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas. Chapters cover the armed struggle by ethnic Mexican and Tejano inhabitants and the siege and surrender of 20 Texas Rangers to a much larger army in San Elizario, which was the only time in history a Texas Ranger unit ever surrendered to adversaries. The later arrival of the African-American 9th Cavalry and a sheriff's posse of New Mexico mercenaries caused hundreds of Tejanos to flee to Mexico, some in permanent exile. Seller Inventory # 00105A
