Emily Hills (1832 - 1917) was a Cleveland, Ohio resident and poetess. This is a very pretty cream-colored book that appears to be bound in a vellum-like material with elaborate gilt cover and spine decorations. The top edge is gilt and the other edges are untrimmed. Page decorations are by Carolus Columbo. Contains a facsimilie letter from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to the author written in 1880. This copy is INSCRIBED by the author on the front end paper to Mrs. Mary Childs. There is a little bowing to the edges of the covers; a small scrape to the upper corner of the rear cover, and a small bluish stray mark on the spine about 1/2" long on the spine. This book is a compilation of the author's poetry and hymns: "Many of these little poems, most of which have been published in different periodicals under the 'nome de plume' of MAIE ALLYNE, were written in a dark room and on a board such as is used by the blind. The Author now publishing them in book form is hoping that they may bring sunshine to weary hearts, even as it has cheered hers to write them." She appears to have visited Italy on more than one occasion, and probably arranged for the publication of this book in Rome. There is a small string-tied four page poem, "In My Father's House," by Mary L. B. Branch, that is loosely laid in with a note on the back in an old hand: "Sent to me by the author" (it is dampstained --but there is no dampstaining to the main book, Pictured Rocks) . Whether this item was simply inserted in the book or whether it was sent by Emily Hills or Mary Branch, is not known. ; Frontis Photo Portrait; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 260 pages; Signed by Author.…
