Synopsis

We decided to print this book in order to share with you some of the many photographs from our collection housed at the El Dorado County Historical Museum. Placerville began as a mining camp and first was known as Dry Diggins. It was called Hangtown for approximately three years as a result of a death sentence pronounced on three men. This sentence was given by a jury after the men were convicted of robbery and murder. When an official name was needed, Placerville won out over Ravine city. Placerville today, although having lost many of the old buildings to fire or demolition, still has some landmarks that are identifiable in the very early pictures.
