About this Item
Four line poem handwritten and signed by poet Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Measures 6+3/4" (width) x 4+3/8" (height). Titled "Kismet" it reads: "A glance, a word - and joy or pain; Befalls, what was no more shall be; Now slight the links are in the chain; That binds us to our destiny! [signed] Thomas Bailey Aldrich." In another hand is written on the lower left corner "April 21st 1894." It is written on a thick cardstock, which was affixed to paper at some point and has adhesive on the back side; the cardstock is so thick that it will does and will not affect the poem or autograph. Aldrich wrote "The Story of a Bad Boy" in 1870, a vigorous narrative based on his own boyhood. His short stories, especially those in "Marjorie Daw and Other People" (1873), are noted for their naturalness and craftmanship. In 1881 he succeeded W. D. Howells as editor of the Atlantic Monthly, a position held until 1890. A clean and attractive item, suitable for framing. Seller Inventory # 005475
