"Popular Fallacies" by A.S.E. Ackermann. 1907 1st edition published by Cassell and Company. This copy is inscribed by Ackermann to author G.H. Thring in pen on the front end paper, as follows: "To G.H. Thring, With many thanks for kind assistance. From A.S.E. Ackermann. 22-10-07." There are eight full-page illustrated plates. Interesting subject matter with insight into the prevailing ideas of the early 20th century. The contents are grouped into the following categories: Domestic Fallacies; Fallacies Connected with Ourselves; Animal Kingdom; Vegetable Kingdom; Mineral Kingdom. Musical Instruments; Legal; Historical; Technical and Scientific; Statistics and Numbers; Weather; General Misinformation; Some Misnomers; Miscellanea. There is an Index at the back. Here are a few examples of fallacies examined: That a Thaw Bursts the Water Pipes; That Cats Suck the Breath out of Sleeping Children; That Moths Eat Clothes; That Sugar is Bad for the Teeth; That a Man has One Rib Less than a Woman; That a Ventriloquist Talks in his Stomach; That a Person Falling from a Great Height (say 200 feet) is Dead Before he Reaches the Bottom; That a Drowning Person always Rises to the Surface Three Times Before Finally Sinking; That Falling Stars are Actual Stars Falling, as their Name Implies; That Tomatoes Induce Cancer; That there is any Connection between Lunatics and the Moon.and many, many more. Condition: There are some small, dark stains on the covers; the spine has darkened. Tiny cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine, and at three of the cover corner tips. There is a stain at the bottom-right corner of the back cover. There is a partial crack at the front hinge between the end paper and half title page resulting in the front cover being just a bit shaky. The pages are lightly age-toned. Pages 43-78 have a worm hole at the upper-outer corner. There are occasional small tears at the outer page edges, and a light smudge and foxing spot here and there. The first front end paper has an inscription in pen dated 1928. The back of the half title page has an inscription from the author in pen dated 1907. Preface page x has what appears to be an address correction in pencil over a printed address. The rear pastedown has a couple tears to the paper. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
