[moderately worn copy, slght fading along spine, short diagonal crease at bottom corner of front cover; internally quite clean, with typical signs of aging to cheap paper]. An outstanding association copy of Cain's most famous novel, INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the title page -- an amusing inscription to film producer and fellow screenwriter Carey Wilson which reads: "To Cary [sic] Wilson / The best edition / of all / Jim." Wilson was the producer of the long-delayed MGM film version of the book, released in 1946, and in fact had been the first writer assigned to the property when MGM resuscitated it in 1944 (having owned the rights for several years but been put off by the censorship challenges), although the screenplay credit on the finished film was shared by Harry Ruskin and Niven Busch. The inscription is undated, but almost certainly dates from the period when the pair were working together on this and another project, "The Common Sin," which never came to fruition. According to Cain biographer Roy Hoopes, Wilson once told Cain that he admired the author's fiction for his believable characters and the interesting situations he put them in: "After all, how much do I care about a goddamn hobo and a waitress out there in that place you put them in your first novel? But for chrissake, I couldn't put it down for two hours when I read that book." Quite apart from the important association, it should be pointed out that ANY signed-by-the-author Armed Services Editions are exceedingly scarce, for the simple fact that most of them rarely ended up anywhere near their authors, having been produced expressly for the reading diversion of American soldiers during World War II. Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. We offer free Media Mail shipping for all domestic (U.S.) orders, and endeavor to keep our Priority Mail rates as reasonable as possible. International shipping in most instances will be via USPS First Class International mail, at the posted rates. Only on rare occasions do we request additional shipping charges, when warranted by the weight or value of the book.
