First printing of this rather scarce novel, basis for the critically acclaimed film that received 12 Academy Award nominations. Very good plus with minor soiling to boards and top and bottom page edges; small smudge spot to front board. Faint pencil erasure to top corner of flyleaf and small stain to top corner tip of pages 81-90, otherwise clean and tight. In a very good plus dust jacket with light age-toning (common with this title). Slight wear at spine ends and corners, with small chip at base of spine and small abrasion to front panel dog illustration. Included is a postcard mailed in 1956 from Savage to a fellow writer: "Dear Jim: It was nice to hear from you. Of course if you send the books I'll autograph them. I have moved down here permanently in the woods, by the sea to write. I have resigned from Brandeis. The Pass is hard to find. I have only one copy myself! Are you writing? What doing? Regards, Tom Savage, Georgetown, ME." The postcard is very good with abrasion to top edge of address side. Signed books and correspondence by Savage are extremely rare.
