Toronto: The Canadian Institute of International Affairs, 1945. First edition. 185 pages. Signed and inscribed by author on front end page in pen "Best Wishes to Jesse T. Steiner//Forrest E. LaViolette". Original green cloth binding with author, title, and publisher stamped on spine in black. LaViolette began conducting this study on Japanese American assimilation in 1934 by researching Japanese American communities in Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Los Angeles. The book discusses the differences between first generation (Issei) and second generation (Nisei) Japanese Americans by examining their jobs, relationships, and communities prior to WWII, with a particular focus on which cultural practices from Japan are preserved and which fall by the wayside in the process of assimilation. Some light wear to cover and at top and bottom of spine. Overall good to very good condition.
