About this Item
First Editions (SD). The first volume was published in 1956, the second in 1962. Both volumes are signed and inscribed by the author, Sandor Rado. The signature is very rare, and no other copy of this book, for sale on the Internet, is signed. In Volume 1 the inscription reads 'To Lisa fondly, Sandor, New York, Nov 1959.' In Volume 2 it reads 'To Lisa and Stan affectionately, Sandor, New York, May 1962.' The photos of the covers should be sufficient to convey their condition. The first volume is darker than the second. The spines on both have toning. There is a smallish thin tear on the front side of the spine just off the bottom edge of Volume 1. There's a good deal of color loss on the covers of volume 2. There's also what appears to be soiling, certainly darkening, emanating up from the front bottom corner and along the bottom edge and part of the middle edge of the rear cover. The corners and edges of both volumes are in very solid shape. The only rubbing is on the rear bottom edge of Volume 1--and a bit on the front bottom edge-- in neither case much of anything. Both volumes are nicely square, both spines look straight. The binding of Volume 1 (387 pages) is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. Same goes for Volume 2 which is 196 pages, with just one instance (between 90 and 91) of a little stress at the juncture, although no crack or space there. There was an 'incident' on page 91 at the bottom corner, something pressed against the paper there leaving some small indents and a small tear, none of it reaching to the print. The same impressions are present on the verso bottom corner (page 92) and you can see a lighter, lightening, imprint of the corner marks over a few pages before and after. That appears to be the only page imperfection in either volume. I'm not seeing any creasing in Volume 2. The pages are exceptionally clean, I'm not finding any soiling at all. In Volume 1, I'm not finding any creasing or soiling. There is a little bit of spotting just off the top edge of the second Contents page and the one page Preface. There is also some of the same spotting on the inside covers and endpapers of both volumes. I didn't see any other spotting in any other place in either volume. I failed to mention that the page edges of both volumes are very clean. Finally, there are no markings or attachments in either volume., and the signed inscriptions represent the only writing to be found in either. 'Sandor Rado was a Hungarian psychoanalyst of the second generation, who moved to the United States of America in the thirties. According to Peter Gay, "Budapest produced some of the most conspicuous talents in the analytic profession: in addition to Sandor Ferenczi, these included Franz Alexander and Sandor Rado." Rado is known for having coined the term "schizotype" in 1956 as an abbreviation of "schizophrenic phenotype". His writings played a foundational role in modern conceptualizations of schizotypy, and the genetic etiology of schizophrenia and psychosis. In 1915 Rado met Freud and decided to become a psychoanalyst. He was analysed first by a former analysand of Freud, E. Revesz, and then, after his move to Berlin, by Karl Abraham. Among his own distinguished analysands were Wilhelm Reich and Heinz Hartmann, the most prominent among the ego psychologists. Rado published eleven psychoanalytic papers between 1919 and 1942 including a 1927 article on "The Problem of Melancholia", which "brought solutions to certain important and pertinent problems still unclarified."-- Otto Fenichel. Rado's work "culminated in his writings on 'adaptational psychodynamics', a concise reformulation of what has come to be known as ego analysis. In them he presciently "criticized the exclusive preoccupation of the therapist with the patient's past and the neglect of his present." Franz Alexander. "On all these points Rado was way ahead of his time."-- Paul Roazen. Seller Inventory # 004249
