The recipients, Laurence Rockefeller were prominent an American philanthropist, financier, and major conservationist and member of the Rockefeller Family. Mary, too, was from a prominent Billings Family. The Rockefellers turned over their land in Woodstock to form Vermont's only National Park, The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park.
